Moving Time

moving

We found out yesterday we get the keys to our new summer home on Friday!

As exciting as this is, we are clueless how to start packing. We started packing up books…you know…the four bookshelves (and then some) worth of books we have crammed into our tiny one bedroom place. We’ve barely made a dent in packing those and we are out of boxes!

If I could take a day to focus, I would search the city streets for empty boxes and have the entire apartment packed in a day. That’s me with a full day to focus on one activity. This week, our ‘activity’ is the 8-5 job we both work. At the end of a work day, how do you find the energy to really wrap your mind around such a large feat?

Getting the keys to our new place this early in the month is awesome news. We have sixteen whole days to move before we would officially be kicked out of our current place. And with parties, weddings, graduations, (not to mention our vacation) all happening at the end of May/beginning of June, we need to be settled SOON.

I’ve moved all of my possessions four times in my life. It never included furniture or a full kitchen set or anything major. This is also our first time we’re moving OUR junk. Not just a his and hers type move. (We’re still very much newlyweds…and clueless)

Yep. clueless describes us perfectly, right now. Excited, just very clueless.

We’re All Mad Here

I have Alice in Wonderland on the mind today.

The Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland series is such a whimsical story. I recommend reading both books to really grasp the fun-loving, imaginative world Charles Dodgson inspired.

I will be going to a little’s baby’s birthday party at the end of May where the theme is Alice in Wonderland. I have big plans to dress up with my husband as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. I’m trying to find inspiration for these outfits, since clearly, we will not be attempting the fat suit look. The two looks below are two great starts, but I do want to add a bit of comedy into the outfits. We’ll see how that turns out.

I should also note this will not necessarily be a costume party. It’s a baby’s party. AND we may very well be the only two dressed up (outside of the one-year old in the Alice costume).

Lately…

Life is good. There are many many questions unanswered. BUT. Life is good.

Last week Taylor graduated from the master’s program. You can see I thought it best to match his robe. (rabbit print shirts-yay!) I’m very proud of his accomplishments thus far.

Also, I am now the owner of a motorcycle jacket and helmet! We took our first official ride together last weekend and I am now hooked. Although when he orders a windshield and a back rest for my seat it’ll be a less strenuous experience.

I threw in that picture of kittens because…well… they’re kittens. They live at my cousin’s house and I’m so sad I can’t take even one of them.

DIY Icing Cake Transfer

DIY Icing Cake Transfer | Mismatched Mess DIY Icing Cake Transfer | Mismatched Mess

Clearly, at this point, my icing skills went to the wayside, but even then, I had such a fun time making this. And what is this you say? This is an icing transfer that I made for my boss!

It’s a joke cake, obviously, so the creepier the better!  I will be making more joke cakes using this method very soon!

I used this instructional which I found on Pinterest. The blogger makes an adorable Dora the Explorer cake which clearly is much prettier than my catastrophe!DIY Icing Cake Transfer | Mismatched Mess

STEPS:

1. Print out desired image
2. Tape an image in between a piece of glass and a piece of wax paper.
3. Trace the outlines and details of the image onto the wax paper
4. Fill in the rest of the icing
5. Freeze icing creation
6. Flip icing onto cake, quickly

New Adventure in T-Minus Four Days

floral2

Last Thursday, me and Taylor began planning our two year anniversary summer vacation. We picked out dates, and began day dreaming about the places we wanted to travel to. (A few on the list are Arkansas, Missouri, Chicago….) We spent all afternoon and evening excitedly planning out a vacation, which easily transitioned into a conversation about our plans to move.

Taylor will be graduating in four days. We could not be further from having a plan laid out after graduation, but we have to move out of our apartment at the end of May. He is applying for teaching jobs in many different cities and states and continually looking for more. No plans, no solid job offers, no preferred places to live. Because of this, we let ourselves get carried away, last night, while we were talking about where we could live; what we do if he doesn’t get offered a teaching job, what would happen if we just picked up and left at the end of May…the possibilities were endless. The ideas ranged from moving five minutes away to five hours away…or further.

We sat in Starbucks for three hours talking about our near future.

I am very excited about moving. I’m ready for a new apartment, a new city, a new experience. I have been preparing for this chapter of our life ever since we married nearly two years ago.

Later that night, as I settled into bed, my mind began stirring all our plans around. Suddenly, the thought of leaving this small town behind wasn’t the greatest idea ever. Leaving this town means leaving much of my family behind. I started to cry.

Taylor and I are introverted and quiet. We kept to ourselves most of the time and found entertainment in the quiet trips to Starbucks or reading a good book. But now, all I could think about was leaving and what it meant to leave our families.

As I quietly buried my head in the blankets letting only a few tears fall, Taylor snuck into the bedroom and tried to surprise me. Upon realizing I was crying he calmly got into bed, wrapped his arms around me and let me sob into his shirt. After a few quiet and tender minutes, I composed myself enough to say “I just started thinking of leaving, and I got really sad.” Realizing, yet again, the emotion behind that sentence I began sobbing again in which Taylor softly said, “It’s okay, Alyssa…we don’t have to go on vacation.”

He was kidding of course. He knew what I meant. He also knew how to lighten the mood.

As scary as it is to leave our very first place, I know wherever life takes us will be a new adventure that I don’t want to miss out on. Sure, we may end up just moving across town for a temporary time until we decide, at the very least, what city we’d like to live in. And that’s ok. My tears may have been premature, but that’s ok, too.

I’m going to miss this first city, this first apartment. I’m going to miss our family. But I’m not going to let that cause us to miss out.

Here’s Why

getit

A couple weeks ago something changed in my life. Of course such a huge change made my brain do a little spin, focus on THAT and become too tired to do anything else…including a ton of blogging.

I mentioned that my job involves managing web designers, customer service and all business matters Internet-based. This job has done a lot for me, but my first love, design, was put to the wayside as I tackled website critiques and overseeing customer service.

I’m blessed to have an awesome boss that noticed my love of design, and he wanted to see my work. I sent him 3 example advertisements last Monday. Ten minutes after the email sent, I was bombarded (in a good way) with advertising and marketing projects. I have been going full steam. I love it! This is such a passion of mine.

Eventually I’ll transition completely out of customer service and deal with marketing full time.

I’m finally slowing down, planning ahead, and slowly starting to visit my laptop again after work. (Full time designing for work is brain-draining)

I don’t want to stop blogging, because it’s become such a digital scrapbook for me to look back on. Can’t stop now, no matter how weary my new, fun job makes me. ;-)

Bacon Topped Kale and Brussels Sprouts Burger!

It’s not a vegetarian burger ’til you put bacon on top of it, amirite?

A few clarifications:

- This is my first homemade burger
- I clearly had no idea what to do
- I got the idea here, where they make a delicious looking spinach burger

I should add I ate these burgers with ranch, hot sauce, and a little sour cream. Delish!

Lately…

lately422plants_1

Given last week’s events, I was struck with the necessity of appreciating the small moments in my life. My heart was constantly being wrenched to learn of the current events, each more sad than the last. I am always awakened to the important of holding tight to the ones we love, living in each moment, and forgiving those who wrong us. Forgiveness is key. It’s the way to move on and not give up on humanity. We’re not terrible. Broken, perhaps. Closed-minded, maybe. We’re a whole lot of oblivious. But we’re not evil.

My life lately…

Dinner with my mom, aunt and cousins at our apartment for the first time// this gorgeous stray dog who has become the neighborhood pet//this Dungeons and Dragons meme cake (clearly my husband baked the cake. I just provided the geekiness)//my mom gave me a pair of jeggings and they are changing my life. I know a lot of people are anti-leggings out there. I’m sorry, I’m just too lazy for real pants. Jeggings is like the best of both worlds for me// sushi dinner with my lovely sister and cousin//the beginnings of a succulent garden// Saturday night home movies and coffee.

We also ate Sunday lunch with Tay’s old roommates and went to the theatre to see Oblivion with Tom Cruise, which was so fun to watch.
